Commons and Vectors

  1. Working definitions of “vectors” and “commons”
    • Commons are accessible resources that are shared within a certain community
    • Vector is something that facilitates the accessibility of these resources and at the same time adds a quantifiable value to them
  2. “Commons”in graphic design
    • color pallets
    • images
    • typography
  3. “Vector”in graphic design
    • Pinterest, because it is a platform that distributes resources that are images

Exercise:

Based on the above understating we chose a graphic design vector and articulated using a graphic design tool:

Using Microsoft Paint as a tool to express the vector Google Fonts

Observations:

  • it was interesting how we used paint to create a vector as well as a raster image
  • we used the graphic design tool Microsoft paint to express the vector google fonts because we wanted to highlight the fact that both are vectors in a way and both are “free” and “accessible” unlike other modern versions of paint like Adobe illustrator
  • We wanted to highlight the above perspective because during discussion, we were confused weather vectors always need to be associated with money in order to make it a distributable commodity or weather it could be freely accessible to the public and still be called a vector.
  • Upon peer interaction, it was interesting to find that there was an “Externality” (a by product of the vector) that emerged in the image expressions above. In the second and third image, it can be observed how the pixels are creating unique patterns which are cause due to the unrecognizable boundaries between the two colors (in this case red and black).
